In the pantheon of Kemet (ancient Egypt) the goddess Bast was a daughter of the sun-god Re, worshipped principally in Lower Egypt (the Nile Delta). She was known as "The Eye of Re", a fierce protector and avenger.
The hieroglyphic representation for Bast is a perfume jar and two loaves of bread.
On temple walls and in statuary she was depicted at various periods in Egyptian history as: a lioness, a large feral desert cat, a regal human female with the head of a cat, or in later years as simply a domestic cat.
